Go Green With Environmentally Friendly

Shipping Supplies   By Don Goodwin

In the world today environmentally friendly has become more important than ever. With everyone trying to do their part to help make our environment cleaner, now you can make a large source of waste product environmentally friendly. When shipping products in cardboard boxes that use packing peanuts or bubble wrap you can cut down a large source of bad waste. There are now cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and packing peanuts that are made from recycled material as well as bio degradable materials. Thousands of pounds of packaging peanuts are used daily. You can now get this material made from soy bean material that is completely bio degradable.

Another commonly used shipping item are pallets. Wood pallets are used frequently, however there are now plastic pallets that are made of recycled products. This not only saves trees by using less wood. It can save you more money on the bottom line by the ability to reuse the pallets longer. There are also one way shipping pallets that are made of recycled material as well. These are perfect for use when you won't be getting your pallet back. They are very inexpensive as well as environmentally friendly.

Even if you don't use green products there is one last way to try to be more environmentally friendly as well as save your company money. Try to reuse boxes, packaging materials, and pallets as much as possible. Also when these products are no longer useful, rather than throwing them in the trash to be taken to a land fill, start a recycling program so that all these items can be useful again. This also will save your company money in the end.

Benchmarch for Recycled Products

What should be the benchmark for an Eco Earth Friendly Products

There are two main considerations that make products “green” or eco earth  friendly.  One is products made of post consumer waste, and the other is products that are bio degradable.  Some products can be both as well.

There are many products in the market today made from post consumer waste. There are many paper and plastic products made from post consumer waste (PCW). The key to these products is how much of this is used in making these items. You can find products made from 15% to 100% post consumer content. The higher the post consumer content the more eco friendly these products become. The main reason for using post consumer waste made paper products is due to the fact they consume  65% less energy , 80% less water, and 90% less air pollution than virgin paper products.*

Another type of eco friendly product to look for are ones that are recyclable or bio degradable. We are facing a serious problem with landfill waste. By using products that you can recycle or are bio degradable materials. It is vital that we as humans begin to take our environment into consideration and begin to use more products like this.

The last type of product is one that is made from post consumer product as well as being bio degradable. Many shipping envelopes and boxes fall under this category. So when you get ready to mail that letter or package, or you receive a package try to recycle or use recycled products.

Send Mail Through USPS.com

When it comes to mailing packages, let your mouse finger do the walking

Save both time and fuel by skipping the trip to the post office the next time you need to send a package. At the U.S. Postal Service's Web site, you can print postage-paid shipping labels, buy stamps and other shipping supplies, change your address, and put your mail on hold, as well as schedule free package pickups from your doorstep.

Hop onto USPS.com right now and you can calculate exactly how much pounds of carbon emissions, along with gallons of gas, you'll stand to save by letting your mouse finger do your walking (or driving, as the case may be).

Difficulty level: Easy

With the growing number of people understanding that reuse is the first option before recycle, all sorts of groups have started up where you can offer your items for free to others who can make use of them. One such service is The Freecycle Network™ which currently has nearly 3.5 million members globally. If you're in Australia, a great new service is E-Cycled.

I've been reading some amazing stories of people who believed *no-one* could make use of their junk, only to find it snapped up when posted to these sorts of sites.

Think re-use before thinking recycle

Greener packing materials

Who doesn't love popping bubble wrap? Fun as it may be, it's not an environmentally friendly product and the same goes for many other packing materials. There are greener packaging options.

If you need to package an item for shipping; here's a few ideas that are a little more earth friendly:

- Always keep some old newspaper on hand. Scrunched up into balls, newspaper can provide substantial cushioning.

- Old cardboard boxes can be torn into strips and then rolled tightly. Place the rolls vertically into the packing box around the item, they will then expand providing a cushion.

- Biodegradable packing peanuts are available, made from grain sorghum and corn starch. I first remember coming across these as a child and thinking that they looked like one of my favorite snack foods... so I used to eat them. They tasted ok, but kids, don't try this at home - I'm not sure if they are treated with other chemicals :).

- For environmentally friendly soft foam in rolls, starch-based pr oducts such as GreenCell have the added bonus of being anti-static - great for cushioning computer parts and electronic equipment.

- Another food based packing product is popcorn. Very springy and easily biodegradable

- Usually used for the garden, pea straw has good cushioning properties, so it's suitable to use as a packing material. The recipient can then mulch it straight into their garden.

- Consider using cushion packaging made from one hundred percent post consumer waste paper

- For wrapping, use recycled paper, same goes with boxes - go for boxes made from recycled cardboard. Most post offices and stationers provide these products.

As for the bubble wrap you do receive; try to keep it - and resist the incredible urge to pop the bubbles :). Re-use it and tack a note onto the wrapping stating "recycle me!"

Non Green packing materials

Bubble wrap has been around since 1960 and since that time I'd hazard a guess that many hundreds of thousands of miles of the stuff has been produced.. and dumped - it's a multi-billion dollar industry.

Bubble wrap is made of polyethylene. Polyethylene products are created through environmentally unfriendly practices and the finished products take hundreds of years to break down.

Another popular packaging material are foam peanuts, mostly made from polystyrene. Toxic chemicals leach from the peanuts, they are made from crude oil and they don't totally break down, just fragment. If burned, polystyrene gives off highly toxic fumes. It's the same sort of situation with any sort of polystyrene foam packing product.

The soft foam cushioning material often used in packing is made from polyurethane. Polyurethane consists of all sorts of nasty chemicals including acetone, methylene chloride and fluorocarbons.

Aside from the toxic chemicals used with most plastic based packing materials and the huge energy resources that going into creating them; the amount of landfill taken up after they are discarded is phenomenal.
